This page will tell you everything you need to know for attending your first Salsa Obsesión Class!
Please read through it thoroughly before attending class, and check the "Class Schedules" tab or our Facebook page for any last minute changes in the schedule due to inclement weather, power outages, etc.
This Q & A formatted page answers some of the most common questions that are asked and also gives you tips that will help make the evening even more enjoyable. We can't wait to see you on the dance floor!
Q: What should I wear to class?
A: Jeans are the norm, as are t-shirts. Please feel free to dress how you wish. However, please dress nicely, but also dress comfortably. Ladies generally wear jeans and a top, some wear skirts or dresses. It’s entirely up to you. After an hour of dancing, it does get hot!
Q: Do I need special shoes or dance shoes?
A: Men: For the beginner level classes, you do not need dance shoes or salsa shoes. Try your best to avoid shoes with a rubber sole (especially tennis shoes), but for men this can be difficult to find. Generally, mens' dress shoes have the least amount of grip on the dance floor and may be your best bet if you have them.
A: Ladies: You do not need dance shoes for the beginner level classes. Try to avoid very high heels or heels that you cannot comfortably turn in without losing your balance. As an alternative, pumps or dress shoes that have a strap securing the top of the foot would be best.
Q: Do I need to make a reservation?
A: No. Reservations are not required.
Q: The sign in the parking lot says “NO PARKING!” Can I park there?
A: YES! The No Parking sign is there to reserve spaces for you to park.
Q: Rotations? I thought I would be dancing with only my partner...
A: Not here! Once we are through the basics, we rotate the ladies around the circle. We do this for several reasons. 1.) Every guy's lead and every girl's follow is different. Since social Salsa dancing is not a choreographed dance, it's best to have as much practice with different types of leads and follows as possible. 2.) Not everyone picks it up as fast as others. If you brought the guy or girl with the 3 left feet, you might be happy that you finally get to move on to the next guy or girl in the rotation (just kidding!) 3.) Not everyone comes with a partner, therefore it's only fair to share. 4.) You might be the star of the night and everyone will want to dance with you. This is your chance to shine!
Q: How early should I arrive?
A: Please plan to arrive approximately 10 minutes early to allow time for sign-in.
Q: Is there an age restriction?
A: Yes, you must be at least 18 years of age to attend classes.
Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: Just a bottle of water if you wish, your Groupon or LivingSocial Voucher (if applicable) and lots of energy!
Q: Can I attend any level class that I want?
A: Anyone can attend the Beginner 1 class. If you plan on attending the upper-beginner class, you should be able to do a cross-body lead and have the basics down. I would suggest at least two to three Beginner 1 classes before moving on to Beginner 2 level classes. If you plan on taking the intermediate, ladies should be able to properly prep and do solid doubles. Men should be able to lead at least 10 separate combinations to beat with minimal basics in between each.
Q: Are classes progressive?
A: All classes are drop-in, but we offer progressive level classes! Beginner 1 – Beginner 2 - Intermediate. As you move through each of the levels, you will learn different combinations, moves, and styling every class. The Upper Beginner and Intermediate classes always feature a new combination, so you will learn something new at every class!
Q: Can I use my Deal Voucher at this location during times other than those listed?
A: No. Your Groupon voucher can only be used during the times listed on your voucher, which are also under the "Class Schedules" tab at the top of this site. (Mondays and Wednesdays from 8pm - 10pm).
Q: Can I use my Deal Voucher for the Cuban Style Rueda Class?
A: No. The Cuban Style (Rueda) Classes are not part of any Deals, as they are taught by DanceInTime. Groupon and LivingSocial deals are only valid towards classes taught by Salsa Obsesion.
Q: When does my Groupon expire?
A: This date depends on the date you purchased your voucher. I can be found printed on your voucher. If you elected for the 6 or 12 lesson Groupon, please start using your Groupon at an early date, in order to allow for enough time to attend all of the classes you purchased before the expiration date. After the expiration date, Groupons will still be accepted at face value of the amount paid, but the schedule and availability are subject to change. Any changes will be updated on this website.
Q: Who can I contact if I have any questions?
